Academy News: Respiratory Care

Respiratory Care Week is October 20-26, a celebration recognizing respiratory therapists' vital role in healthcare. This week highlights the importance of respiratory care professionals in treating patients with breathing disorders and raising awareness about lung health. It's a time to honor the dedication and expertise of those who work tirelessly to improve respiratory health and to educate the public on the significance of respiratory care.

Many Respiratory Therapists participated in a Fly-in Advocacy effort in May, asking for support with legislative bills like:

  • Co-Sponsorship of HR 1406 and S 3021 the Sustainable Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Services in the Home Act
  • Support the Long-Term Care Workforce Support Act S 4120
  • Co-Sponsorship of S 3821 or HR 7829 the Supplemental Oxygen Access Reform (SOAR) Act

Respiratory Therapists and the AARC have been instrumental in championing the SOAR Act in the House of Representatives. Their proactive involvement underscores their dedication to enhancing patient care for those with respiratory conditions, ensuring they receive the necessary treatment without barriers due to cost or availability. The Act also highlights the need for sustainable reimbursement models that enable providers to continue offering these critical services.

The Supplemental Oxygen Access and Adequate Reimbursement Act, championed by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), is primarily focused on ensuring that patients in need of supplemental oxygen have reliable access to this critical therapy. The Act also aims to ensure that healthcare providers receive adequate reimbursement for providing these services. You can read more about the SOAR Act here: SOAR

Critical aspects of the Act include:

  • Ensuring Access to Supplemental Oxygen: The legislation addresses gaps in access to supplemental oxygen, which is vital for patients with chronic respiratory conditions. It seeks to ensure that patients receive the oxygen they need, regardless of their geographic location or economic status.
  • Adequate Reimbursement: The Act advocates for fair and sufficient reimbursement rates for providers who supply supplemental oxygen. This is crucial for maintaining the availability of high-quality oxygen therapy services and ensuring that providers can continue to deliver these essential services without financial strain.
  • Patient-Centered Care: The Act emphasizes the importance of patient-centered care, ensuring that the delivery of supplemental oxygen is tailored to meet each patient's specific needs. This includes considerations for the type and amount of oxygen therapy required and the duration of care.
