Guidelines for Research Review
and Useage of NAP Lists

Use of Database and/or lists for surveys or research

The NAP database and lists may not be used for research or surveys unless explicit permission is given by the NAP Research Review Committee. The following is not intended to curtail research, but rather to protect personal information of NAP members.

In order to obtain permission the following steps must first be completed:

A. The researcher must first submit the following to the NAP Central Office, using the form below:*

  1. Statement of purpose of the survey or research
  2. Statement of significance and implications to NAP
  3. Brief description of methodology
  4. Data analysis plan, including time frame
  5. Identification of sources of support for study
  6. Copy of cover letter to participants
  7. Copies of any instruments/questionnaires
  8. Copy of consent form
  9. Copy of plan to de-identify participant data
  10. Copy of IRB approval from the applicant’s institution
  11. Copy of researcher’s biosketch (1-2 pages only)
  12. Agreement to submit a hard copy summary of the completed research to the NAP Central Office

B. The Research Review Committee will review the submission for completeness and appropriateness.

C. In conference with the Central Office and the Chair(s) of the Academy(s) of the applicant(s), the Research Review Committee will make a determination re whether permission to use the list serve will be given.

D. Central Office will inform the applicant of the NAP’s decision.

General use of the NAP database or lists

Using the NAP database or lists for non-NAP purposes is not permitted. Violators will lose their access to Member Only pages on the NAP website and their names and email addresses will be removed from the listserve.

In some cases, Committee Chairs may include an email list of committee members in order to facilitate discussion among committee members. That list is only to be used for committee purposes. Emails announcing unrelated conferences or for-profit enterprises are forbidden. In cases where a member is in doubt as to the relevance of an intended email, s/he should consult his/her Chair.

Under no conditions is an NAP lists to be combined with a non-NAP list.
