Governance - How NAP works

NAP Council
The function of the NAP Council is to make decisions affecting the direction and programs of the organization. It is made up of all the Academy Chairs and Co-Chairs and the Executive Committee and is staffed by the Central Office. The Council meets face-to-face twice a year, usually in March and September and in the Washington, DC area. In June and in December, meetings are held by conference call. Chairs and Co-Chairs serve a two-year term and are elected by their Academy.  

Executive Committee
The Executive Committee consists of five Officers: the President, President-Elect, Immediate Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer and various Vice Presidents, including: VPs for Public Policy, Interdisciplinary Care and Honoring Achievements and Membership. The Officers are elected by the Council and serve two year terms. The Executive Committee is empowered to make decisions for NAP between Council meetings provides leadership for NAP activities.  

Committees
There are various committees: Public Policy, By-Laws, Finance, Membership and Interdisciplinary Care. A Chair is appointed by the President with the consent of Council. Members may be appointed by the President and may be invited by the Chair. In practice, NAP members may volunteer for any committee.  

Task Forces and Work Groups
These are ad hoc groups appointed by the President. A Chair is appointed by the President with the consent of Council. Members may be appointed by the President and may be invited by the Chair. In practice, NAP members may volunteer for any committee.  

Central Office
NAP has an Executive Director, currently at 50% full-time employment, and several part-time assistants. These staff members provide administrative support and work to implement the directives of the NAP Council.   

Funding
NAP is funded primarily by member dues and donations. We are a tax-exempt 501c3 corporation. All donations are tax-deductible.
