Health Care Reform
From the New York Times - After decades of failed attempts by a string of Democratic presidents and a year of bitter partisan combat, President Obama signed legislation on March 23, 2010, to overhaul the nation's health care system and guarantee access to medical insurance for tens of millions of Americans.
It was the largest single legislative achievement of Mr. Obama's first two years in office, and the most controversial. Not a single Republican voted for the final version, and Republicans across the country campaigned on a promise to repeal the bill.

Comments Concerning Restrictive Practices of ARNPs in Florida
by Donna Neff, Nursing Academy
Interprofessional practice is viewed as a means to expand access to high quality health care and reduce costs. Barriers to practice, such as experienced by nurse practitioners, are grounded in outdated laws regarding scope of practice. Such barriers undercut interprofessional practice, particularly in the care of vulnerable populations such as chronically ill and terminally ill patients. Historically, opponents of expanding the scope of practice of ARNPs and PAs cite concerns about patient safety.
In a recent Florida policy analysis, the scope of practice issues were outlined. In Florida, the law neither prohibits nor requires insurance companies and managed care companies to allow ARNPs and PAs to bill them directly (The Florida Legislature, 2010). However, ARNPs are not allowed to directly bill insurance companies and managed care organizations. While NPs in several states in the US have limitations to controlled substance prescription authority, Florida is one of two states (Alabama) that prohibits ARNPS from prescribing controlled substances. These limitations in scope of ARNP practice affect their ability to practice independently of physician supervision. There also is variability within physician's practices as to the extent to which ARNPs can function to their full capabilities.
